4 paper partbooks of an original 5? (D-v + 62 + ii + i folios, A-ii + iii + 64 + ii + i, T-ii + iii + 65 + ii + i, Q/S-ii + ii + 104 + ii + i), 221 x 169. Original ink foliation (D: 1-62; A: 1-61; T: 1-64; Q/S: 1-77); modern pencil foliation in all books except D (A: 1-64; T: 1-65; Q/S: 1-104) includes some folios not numbered by original foliation. Original covers of dark brown leather on cardboard, tooled in gold with ornamental designs, voice designations, and "EDWARDUS PASTON." Original indices on first original flyleaf at back of each book include all pieces in main layer, grouped by number of voices. Six- and 7-voice pieces listed in order of appearance; 5-voice pieces grouped alphabetically by first letter of text, with subgrouping under each letter by order of appearance.
One main repertorial layer, with two additional layers: (1) three motets added at beginning of all books except D; (2) 21 pieces for three and four voices added on new ff. 81 '104' of Q/S book, copied in choirbook format (i.e., all voices present in Q/S book). Copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (see BrettEP for list of other books in the same hand and for discussion of related manuscripts from Paston's circle). Staff height 12.5. A few inked calligraphic initials and plain inked initials; no other decoration. Watermark: grape cluster (not in Briquet or Heawood).
Early 17th Century. Of English provenance; originated in the household of Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Later owned by Frederick Lygon, 6th Earl Beauchamp (1830-91) and by Sir Frederick Ouseley (1825-89), founder of St. Michael's College (near Tenbury, Worcester). Bequeathed to St. Michael's College by Ouseley; deposited in Bodleian Library in 1979.
