General Description

A Tenor partbook of a set originally of 8. Copied by one main scribe and five additional scribes. Repertory copied by main scribe in two sections: (1) verse anthems; (2) full anthems. Within each section, pieces are grouped by increasing number of voices (5-8); works by same composer are usually grouped together. Copied in Oxford; repertory suggests connections with Worcester Cathedral. The original owner was Jarvas Jones; Preface states that Jones donated original set of eight partbooks to collegiate church in Southwell, Nottingham. (Books may never have reached Southwell, however—MorehST). Owned in 18th century by John Alcock of Lichfield. Purchased c. 1910 by E. Gordon Duff of Oxford; given to E. H. Fellowes in 1924. Presented by Fellowes to St. Michael's College (near Tenbury, Worcester); deposited in Bodleian Library in 1979.
