General Description

A Bassus partbook from a set originally of 6. The main scribe was probably Dericke Gerarde, composer and music director for Henry Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel; Gerarde also copied LonBLR A49-54 and several other manuscripts not within scope of this catalogue (see EppsDG, BernsCE for list and discussion). Two incomplete Italian pieces on ff. 47-47' copied by a different hand, on different paper. All folios except f. 47 have printed staves and decorative margins, similar but not identical to those in LonBL 15166 and LonBL 30480-4. Probably copied at Nonesuch Palace (Cheam, Surrey), for use in household of Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel (d. 1580). Later passed to Arundel's son-in-law, John, 6th Baron Lumley (d. 1609). Arundel-Lumley collection became part of Old Royal Library, which passed to newly founded British Museumin 1757.
