General Description

A Discantus partbook of a set originally of 5 volumes. Copied by several scribes, possibly including Hugh Geare. Of English origin; possibly copied in Dorset. 'Hugh Geare' and 'Dorset' appear on f. 80'. Geare may have been the original owner, and possibly one of the scribes; he may be related to John Geare (1566-1645), vicar at Lyme Regis and Symondsbury, both in Dorset (BernsCE). Later owned by Julian Marshall; purchased by British Museum at a Sotheby's sale in 1884.
