General Description

A Quintus partbook from a set originally of seven volumes. Music copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Presented to Madrigal Society in 1832 by the collector Stephen Groombridge; placed on permanent deposit at British Museum in 1953.

Physical Description

The copying of parts in the Altus, Quintus and Sextus books is inconsistent: the Altus contains the Altus from f. 1-8v, the Quintus from f. 9-16v, and the Sextus from f. 17 to the end; the Quintus contains the Quintus from f. 1-8v, and the Altus from f. 9 to the end; and the Sextus contains parts labelled Sextus, Cantus secundus and Quintus (f. 18v-20, 21v-24v).

Original covers of dark brown leather, blind-tooled with fleur-de-lis design enclosed by rectangular border with thistle motifs at each corner; new leather spine, with flower motifs tooled in gold.
