General Description

A Bassus partbook from a set originally of 4 volumes. Music copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (see BrettEP for list of other books in the same hand and for discussion of related manuscripts from Paston's circle). Of English provenance; originated in the household of Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Later owned by William Hayman Cummings (1831-1915), whose bookplate appears inside front covers. Purchased by Folger Shakespeare Library from bookseller William H. Schab in 1946.
