General Description

The Tenor from a set of 3 partbooks (of 4 or perhaps 5 - there being pieces for 4vv and 5vv; the fourth, Bassus, book now lost; if there was a Quintus it was lost by 1609 when the set was catalogued). The books contain motets, madrigals (French and Italian words), a Miserere, an Anthem in English, and some instrumental 4-part fragments in quasi-score, which Milledge categorically states are not in Gerarde's hand.

The MSS. belonged to (John, Lord) Lumley; Lumley cat. f. 418, the set then containing four volumes.

Physical Description

Flyleaves of RA 23 re-used to conserve fragments at the rear of the book.

One folio of RA 25 is missing between f.42 and f.43; it is bound into the Tenor book of Royal Appendix 76 as f.51.

DIAMM, 2022
Binding

Original covers and flyleaves are lost, except for the flyleaves of RA 23, which have been reused by British Library conservationists as conservation sheets for badly damaged pages at the back of the book.

Eighteenth century binding of half-leather over boards, dated 1757.

Watermark

gloved hand plus five-pointed star, with the figure 3 and the letters RP on the glove

DIAMM, 2022
Liminary Note

Lumley's name appears on what is now f.1 of RA 23 and RA 24. On f.1 of RA 24 Gerarde's name (signature?) appears as 'dyricke gerard'; and on f.44 of RA 23, above one of the fragments, in the same hand is 'diricke gerarde'. Folio 49 of RA 25 is headed 'Quod crowder/ of crowder's hill' in the same or a similar hand.

General Note

The opening of the piece is in RA 76 (f. 51v), on a page presumably transferred from this ms. The fragment continues on this folio. At the top is written (by Gerarde, perhaps as an attribution) "Quod crowder/ of crowder’s hill".
