General Description

A Sextus partbook from a set of 6, containing 40 motets for 6-10 voices. Although unattributed, many are known from concordances to be by Dyricke Gerarde. Copied mostly by Gerarde, although in a few places the hand of an assistant can be discerned, Some of the books bear Gerarde's name; the same books carry the ownership stamp of John Lumley. The books were probably copied late in Gerarde's career; though intended as a 'fair copy', there are a number of errors and omissions, and on several occasions (especially in Quintus) a 2a pars precedes the 1a, presumably owing to turning 2 pages at once, then turning back to copy the 2a pars.
