General Description

A partbook from a set of four volumes; a square of parchment with the designation 'Contratenor' bound at the front of the book appears to be a remnant of a limp vellum binding. (NB In the numbering of the set, the Contratenor comes before the Triplex). Copied by a single scribe. Repertory organised (with some exceptions and inconsistencies) in liturgical categories (Masses, Kyries, Alleluias, etc.); within each category, pieces are arranged in descending order of seniority of composers. Probably copied in London, for use at St. Paul's Cathedral (BaillieS). Inscriptions indicate ownership by a certain Philip Gyffard. Purchased by British Museum at a Puttick's sale in 1849.

Notified that John Taverner's Dum transisset sabbatum in these partbooks is the (possibly earlier) 4-part version of this setting – not the 5-part version, as previously stated in the inventory here. Also pointed out that this the only source for the 4-part version.
