RISM B/IV 5: XVIe s. 102 ff. (+ 3 ff. de garde). Parchemin, 171 x 240 mm. Foliotation ancienne en eh. romains: I-CI + 1 f. n.ch. et les 3 ff. de garde paginés i-vi. Les ff. vi, 48v, 49, 101v sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 6 portées par p. Miniature aux ff.lv et 49v. Initiales ornées, certaines en coul. Aux p. i à iv, Index alphabétique des pièces jusqu'à la lettre P, contemporain du ms. et Index des compositeurs signé F.[erdinando] L.[iuzzi].

Ce ms. d'origine franco-flamande, oeuvre d'un seul scribe, semble-t-il, a été légué à la Biblioteca del Conservatorio par Abramo Basevi (mort en 1885). L. de Burbure sur la foi de la comète qui apparaît à la miniature du f. 49v (facsim. in Burbure), date le ms. de 1532, ce qui semble trop tardif. En effet, si l'on interprète à la suite de Pirro (Histoire de la musique, p. 229) les paroles du no 80 comme une allusion aux 14 années de dévouement de P. de La Rue au service de Marguerite d'Autriche, où il était entré en 1492, on peut penser que le ms. a été copié dès 1506, date que corroborent le répertoire et les concordances avec d'autres sources. D'autre part, si l'on y reconnaît l'écriture de Martin Bourgeois, scribe qui disparaît des listes de paiement en 1514 (Keilman), on fixe ainsi la date extrême du recueil. Les armes qui figurent aux ff. Iv et Lv (facs. in Burbure) n'ont pu être jusqu'à présent identifiées avec certitude, bien que Staehelin ait cru pouvoir y reconnaître celles de la famille pisane Conte Agostini della Seta. La louve romaine (que l'on retrouve aussi sur la miniature du f. 49v) marque en tout cas l'origine italienne.

BurbE (1882) transcribes the text of la Rue's song on f. 15v as "Dedans boutez dedans/Entres en service de dames/Soes leal de cuer et dame/C'est l'uasige des vrays amans". This reading offers meaning, instead of the (garbled?) "Dedens bouton, boutons dedens" usually quoted.
