Copied mostly by Netherlands court scribe Petrus Alamire (KellJ); WarmMC distinguishes two music scripts: C2 (main scribe); and X (ff. 1-12', 14-18', 23'-28', 30'-44, 45'-46, 61-62', 68'-78', 79'-84, 85'-98, 99'-100, 115'-117, 119'-124') - later attributing some of these folios to X1 (KellmanTO). She identifies text scripts C4 (main text scribe) and X. Copied in Brussels/Mechlin; belongs to Netherlands court complex (KellJ). Perhaps one of the manuscripts sent to Emperor Charles V in Spain, mentioned in court pay records of 1524-6. Passed in 1558 to Charles' son, Philip II, King of Spain (1527-98); listed as #16 in 1602 and 1620 inventories of Philip's books. Purchased in 1620 by Real Convento de las Señoras de la Encarnaçion in Madrid; acquired from the Encarnaçion by Benedictine monastery at Montserrat, probably during 1920's. Originally 136 folios.
