General Description

A Bassus partbook from a set originally of four or five volumes. Copied by a single scribe, who also wrote ff. 1-5 of ShrewR 2. Copied in Ludlow, for use at Church of St Lawrence. Deposited at present location in Shrewsbury in 1950.

1 paper partbook of an original 4 or 5 (B-18 folios), 152 x 205. Folios in very poor condition, but restored and gauzed. Ink faded on most folios; some headings and music now illegible. New pencil foliation, 1-18, on upper left versos. Original covers of tan parchment, with modern string tie. No index. Copied by a single scribe, who also wrote ff. 1-5 of ShrewR 2. Inked calligraphic initials decorated with grotesque faces. Watermark: extended hand with five-pointed star (only fragment visible).

Ca. 1570 (DanS). Copied in Ludlow, for use at Church of St. Lawrence. Deposited at present location in Shrewsbury in 1950.

Pointed out that the service by Tallis is not the Short/Dorian Service (as previously stated in the inventory here), but one of two incomplete services by Tallis known only from their bass parts (the other being in a source in St John's College, Oxford).
