General Description

Copied by Netherlands court scribe B (= Martin Bourgeois?) (Staehelin 1967). Copied in Brussels/Mechlin; belongs to Netherlands court complex. Purchased in Rome by Franciscus Blandinus in 1715 (inscription on f. 1).

RISM

XVIe s. 162ff (= 163, le f. 43 chiffré 2 fois). Parchemin, 315 x 223 mm. Foliotation moderne en haut des ff. Les ff. 1, 16v, 17, 32v, 33, 47v, 48, 105v, 106, 121v, 122, 145v à 162 sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 8, 9 ou 10 portées par p. Capitales et marges ornées en couleurs. Reliure ancienne cuir estampé fers dorés.

Le f. 1 porte, en même temps que le cachet de la bibliothèque daté 1725, la mention suivante: «Franciscus Blanchinus emit Romae Kal. Julii 1715», ce qui indique que le ms., acheté à Rome en 1715, serait entré dix ans plus tard à la Capitolare. Le style de l'écriture et des miniatures ainsi que le répertoire désignent très nettement une origine franco-flamande, ce qui n'exclut pas que la copie ait pu être exécutée en Italie par un scribe étranger. On date le ms. des toutes premières années du XVIe s. sans qu'il soit possible de préciser à quel personnage ou organisme religieux ce recueil luxueux (mais non terminé, semble-t-il) était destiné. Il semble plus vraisemblable qu'il ait été compilé dans l'entourage de Philippe le Beau ou de Marguerite d'Autriche à Malines, comme on a pu le supposer pour le ms. I-Fc 2439, avec lequel on relève beaucoup d'affinités en ce qui concerne le scribe qui pourrait être Martin Bourgeois. Les armes qui figurent dans les initiales aux ff. lv et 48v et qui sont certainement celles du premier possesseur du ms. n'ont pu être jusqu'à présent identifiées.

*Credo of Missa Pascale on ff. 48'-64 = Credo "Tmeiskin was jonck" attributed to Isaac in VienNB 1783; appears there as part of different Mass whose other four movements are attributed to Brumel. Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus of present Missa Pascale also appear in VienNB 1783 (with different Credo), attributed to A. Agricola. Sanctus has conflicting attribution to "Verbonnet" [= Ghiselin] in VerBC 756.

Harvard University's library catalog now includes a scan of Armen Carapetyan's personal microfilm of this ms. The scans are viewable by anyone, not just Harvard affiliates, and I found this by querying their library database directly, so I assume that it is OK to share this link publicly.
