General Description

Copied by Netherlands court scribe Petrus Alamire (KellJ). WarmMC distinguishes two music and text scripts: scribe X (music on ff. 1'-3, 13'-14, 33-34, 49-50, 54', 64, 77-78, and 97'-98, and most text in manuscript); and scribe C2 (music on ff. 3'-12, 14'-32, 34'-48', 50'-63, 64'-76, 78'-89, 90'-96). She later proposed that some of the text copying might be by scribe C5 (KellmanTO). Copied in Brussels/Mechlin; belongs to Netherlands court complex (KellJ). Sent as gift to Pope Leo X (1475-1521). vdHeide2019 argues that the book was made for Lord John III of Bergen op Zoom and only subsequently converted into a gift to Leo X (a gift he places around 1513, the date of Leo's election).

Covers of medium brown leather over boards, blind tooled with decorative designs; no clasps or bosses. Covers date from 18th century (LlorCS), but decoration imitates earlier style.

XVIe s. 110ff + 1f. limin. Parchemin, 596 x 404 mm. Pas de foliotation. Le f. limin. r-v, les ff. 1, 13v, 32v, 48v, 63v, 76v, 89v, 90, 96v, 97, 110v sont blancs. Nombreux, ff. arrachés au ms. primitif entre 13 et 14, 32 et 33, 48 et 49, 63 et 64, 76 et 77. Notation mesurée blanche. 9-11 portées par p. Bandes et initiales ornées de miniatures en coul. dont beaucoup ont maintenant disparu. Reliure du XVIIIe s.

Ms. copié à Malines chez Marguerite d'Autriche, comme le montre le style flamand des miniatures (semblables à celles des mss. 34 et 36 de la Sistina), probablement par Alamire, et donné ensuite (probablement en 1518-19 à l'occasion de l'élection impériale) au pape Léon X dont les armoiries et l'effigie figurent dans le ms.
