General Description

Composite of several unrelated manuscripts of various sizes, later bound together. Contents include genealogical pedigrees, accounts, legal documents, and other writings. Only ff. 260-261 contain music, and are apparently part of a large quarto chansonnier from Mechelen. Copied by Netherlands court scribe B (= Martin Bourgeois?). Copied in Brussels/ Mechlin; belongs to Netherlands court complex (KellJ). Owned by the antiquarian Elias Ashmole (1617-92); bequeathed to Oxford University in 1677. Housed in Ashmolean Museum 1683-1860, then transferred to Bodleian Library.

ii paper + i paper + 259 paper + 2 parchment + ii paper folios, of varying sizes. Composite of several unrelated manuscripts later bound together. Contents include genealogical pedigrees, accounts, legal documents, and other writings from 16th and 17th centuries. Modern ink foliation, 1-261; various systems of original foliation in individual manuscripts. New covers of brown leather over boards. Only ff. 260-261 (parchment, 346 x 211) contain music: apparently the only surviving remnants of a choirbook copied by Netherlands court scribe B (= Martin Bourgeois?; see general index for other manuscripts copied by the same scribe). Staff height 14. Initials and borders illuminated in Ghent-Bruges style.
