General Description

A Tenor partbook from a set originally of 4 volumes. Music copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (see BrettEP for list of other books in the same hand and for discussion of related manuscripts from Paston's circle). Of English provenance; originated in the household of Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Later owned by William Hayman Cummings (1831-1915), whose bookplate appears inside front covers. Purchased by Folger Shakespeare Library from bookseller William H. Schab in 1946.

3 paper partbooks of an original 4 (A-iii + 48 + i folios, TB-iv + 48 + ii folios each), 117-20 x 198. Original ink foliation, 1-48, in each book. Original covers of creamy yellow parchment over cardboard; front covers inscribed with voice designations and "4 vocum/Lauda anima mea/Byrd." Original index on ff. [iii-iii'] of B book groups pieces alphabetically by first letter of text, with subgrouping under each letter by order of appearance. Music copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (see BrettEP for list of other books in the same hand and for discussion of related manuscripts from Paston's circle). Staff height 7.0. No initials or decoration. Main watermark: fleur-de-lis on crowned shield (not in Briquet); several folios have grape cluster watermark, partially cut off.
