General Description

A Discantus I partbook from a set originally of 8 volumes (other partbooks of same set are LonBLM G.9-15). Music copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston. Of English provenance; originated in the household of Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. The manuscript (together with Add. MS 34001-34002) appears to have belonged to Thomas Oliphant and John Pyke Hullah in the 19th century. Purchased by British Museum from G. Linnell, Esq. in 1891.

Incomplete system of original ink foliation, 1-24 (beginning on first folio with music) crossed out and replaced by new pencil foliation, 1-46 (begins on third flyleaf and excludes last three folios, which have blank staves only). Pieces appear on the same folios in each book; blank folios left in 8a vox where the piece does not have an 8th voice.

Original parchment covers, with inscription "Cantus. 7 et 8 vocum / (Beata es)." No index. No initials or decoration.
