General Description

Composite of at least three originally separate manuscripts or sections of manuscripts: Part I = new ff. 2-145; Partii = new ff. 146-241 (once joined with ff. 1-166 and 197-200 of TrentC 87); Part III [blank staves only] = new ff. 242-264 (once joined with ff. 167-196 and 201-218 of TrentC 87). Some fascicles in each part may have been separately produced and independently used before being bound together, but all fascicles within each part generally interrelated by repertory, paper, and scribes. Part I copied by one main scribe, identified by Wright (unpublished) as perhaps Nicole Merques; five or six other scribes made later additions on openings left blank by main scribe (WrdS). Main scribe of Part II identified by WrighT as Johannes Lupi, a musician and priest active in and around Trent between 1447 and his death in 1467; Lupi also wrote ZwettlB s.s. and most of Part I of TrentC 87. Two additional scribes in Part II, one of whose hands also appears in Part I of TrentC 87. Part I closely related to sections II-III of AostaS D19 by repertory and watermarks, but not by common scribes (CobinA, WrdS). Part I copied in Basel-Strasbourg region; repertory probably in use at chapels connected with Council of Basel (1431-49) and court of antipope Felix V, the former Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy (WrdS). Parts II-III possibly originated in Venice or vicinity (DTO), or perhaps in Basel-Strasbourg region (WrighCT); once formed portions of two separate manuscripts. Some gatherings from both former manuscripts now part of TrentC 87; about 1440, gatherings other than those incorporated into TrentC 87 were reordered, combined with Part I, supplied with new index, and rebound to form present TrentC 92. Johannes Lupi (see above) was responsible for ordering gatherings in present form and preparing new index (WrighT). Manuscript transferred from Trent to Vienna in 1891, but returned to Trent following World War I.

Ces 7 manuscrits, dont les 6 premiers ont été révélés par Haberl en 1885 (cf. Bibliographie), tandis que le 7e ne fut découvert qu'en 1920 (R. von Ficker, in DTÖ 61 (XXXI) VIff) consituent une véritable famille indissoluble en ce qu'ils présentent tant de caractères communs qu'il semble logique d'en donner d'abord une description d'ensemble pour préciser ensuite les particularités de chacun d'eux en même temps que le dépouillement de leur contenu.

Ils fournissent un énorme répertoire en grande partie religieux, sans pour cela que la musique profane soit complètement négligée, qui va de Loqueville à Isaac et Compère, couvrant 25OOff. avec 1870 pièces environ, qui peuvent se dater entre 1420 et 1480. En 1921, R. Wolkan (cf. Bibliographie) avait émis l'opinion que ces mss. copiés à Vienne sous l'impulsion de Johann Hinderbach (né en 1418), secrétaire à la chancellerie impériale, auraient suivi celui-ci à Trente où, en 1455, il avait été nommé prévôt à la cathédrale puis porté à l'évêché en 1465. E. Wellesz va plus loin en les déclarant copiés, à Vienne d'abord puis à Trente, sur ordre de Hinderbach pour sa bibliothèque personnelle qui devait ensuite être donnée au chapitre de la cathédrale (Grove's Dictionary, 5th ed,. 1954). Cependant, comme on ne trouve dans ces mss. aucune pièce de circonstance de la vie de l'empereur Friedrich III, alors que les allusions à des personnages tridentins, même peu célèbres, y sont évidentes et que l'un des copistes Johannes Wiser occupa diverses charges à Trente de 1459 à 1490, il est logique de penser qu'ils ont plutôt été copiés, sinon tous à Trente même, du moins dans l'Italie du nord (cf. Bibliographie, Lunelli). Il est possible aussi qu'ils aient été acquis (en tout cas les plus anciens) par l'évêque de Trente Alexander Masowien, alors en relation avec Amédée VIII de Savoie pour la chapelle duquel ils auraient été copiés (cf. WardTS, p. 144). — On peut diviser ces 7 mss. en deux groupes: d'une part 87 et 92 qui sont les plus anciens, d'autre part 88, 89, 90, 91 et 93 qui sont légèrement postérieurs, 91 étant le plus récent. Le même papier et le même scribe, qui inscrit son nom Puntschucherh au bas du f. 161 du ms 87 (mais s'agit-il d'un nom? Cf. Flotzinger, Bibliographie TRbc 87) se retrouvent pour la première partie du ms. 87 (f. 1—218) et la deuxième partie du ms. 92 (f. 144—239), la relation entre les deux mss. étant de plus soulignée par le fait qu'un Kyrie de Binchois au f. 56v du ms. 87 (n° 34) est accompagné d'une mention renvoyant pour Y Et in terra suivant au premier f. du ms. 92 (n° 2). Ces deux mss. ont certainement été copiés avant 1450 dans l'Italie du Nord, tandis que l'on peut fixer approximativement la date de compilation des cinq autres entre 1445 et 1480, le scribe Johannes Wiser en ayant copié la plus grande partie à Trente même.

XVe s. 239 [= 240]ff., Papier (1er fol. limin. parchemin) 310X210 mm. Foliotation ancienne en ch. arabes (avec quelques ch. romains et quelques lacunes). Les ff. llv, 16v, 17, 31v, 32, 46, 49v, 50, 53, 73v, 74, 75v à 77, 84v à 85v, 94, 109v, 112v, 113,114v, 115. 130v, 131,153, 156, 159, 161, 164, 191v, 192, 234 à 236, 240 sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 7 à 10 portées par p. Aux 2ff. limin. n. ch., tables du ms. par ordre alphabétique d'incipit.

Ce ms. est, avec TRbc 87, le plus ancien de la série. Une première partie, qui comprend les 144 premiers ff., formait autrefois un ms. indépendant composé de la réunion de 12 cahiers dont des adjonctions postérieures ont détruit l'unité primitive. Le scribe principal (on peut en distinguer 6) semble avoir élaboré un plan pour chaque cahier qui devait réunir des oeuvres de même genre, et projeté de les relier ensemble. Les index permettent de rétablir plus ou moins la constitution du ms., 1e premier ne mentionnant que les 144 premiers ff., tandis que l'autre en est la copie à laquelle on a ajouté le reste du ms., copié, semble-t-il à la même époque que la première partie, car le répertoire des deux parties présente une certaine unité avec prépondérance donnée (en tenant compte des identifications et des doubles attributions) à Dufay avec 47 pièces, Binchois avec 27 et Dunstable avec 22, et une majorité de musique sacrée avec seulement 4 chansons dans TR92 I (n°s 102, 103, 104, 105) et 2 dans TR92 II (n' 169, 175, 218) dont aucune ne figure dans les index. On peut dater le n° 16 écrit pour la consécration de Sa. Maria del Fiore à Florence en 1436 et aussi le n° 26 destiné à saluer la paix conclue entre le pape Eugène IV et l'empereur Sigismond en 1433; mais, ici les noms Eugenius et Sigismundus ont été nettement grattés, ce dernier étant remplacé par la lettre IV, ce qui laisse supposer que la copie est un peu postérieure à la date de la paix, soit même après la mort des deux souverains (respectivement 1447 et 1437). Ward émet l'hypothèse que le ms. aurait été copié dans la région Bâle-Strasbourg pour l'usage de la chapelle du duc de Savoie Amédée VIII (antipape Felix V), le répertoire étant celui de cette chapelle et de la chapelle conciliaire (Concile de Bâle). Tenor super ave maris stella Dufay sine faulx bourdon. T and Ct differentfrom other sources. Du Fay's hymn has two performance options: with fauxbourdon, or with alternative contratenor. Q15, ModB and CS15 offer the latter option; Q15 again, MuEm (St Emmeram) and BU 2216 offer the faulxbourdon version. Here in Tr90 another alternative Ct & T (not by Du Fay?) are offered to go with Du Fay's Cantus.
