Fragment consisting of only one bifolio of a once much larger collection. Contains an index (f.1r) and four motets (two incomplete), originally forming the outer bifolio of first quaternion of a manuscript of 48 folios (presumably six quaternions). Present note of ownership reads 'Iste liber motetorum pertinet capelle illustrissimi principis Philippi ducis Burgondie et comitis Flandrie'; last six words are in a later hand over erasure. Erased text partly legible under ultraviolet light: '… quem scripsit Michael [new line] de …ia, ejusdem principis capellanus, millesimo trecentesimo sexto'. Name replaced by 'Philippi' is illegible. Listed as no. 64 in the 1420 Dijon chapel inventory of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, as 'Item ung grant livre plat, noté, de plusieurs motez, virelaiz et balades qui commence: Colla jugo fidere [sic], et se fenit Bis dicitur'; possibly larger of two motet books listed in 1404 chapel inventory of Philip the Bold. Bifolio used for account book cover in 1512 by George de la Trémoïlle, who would have received MS as part of the property of Charles the Bold that Louis XI gave him in 1477. Bifolio remained property of Trémoïlle family until acquired by Bibliothèque Nationale de France c.1970.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT INVENTORY
Apart from the index, the source currently contains only folios 2 and 3 (see also under 'Foliation') = only (fragments of) four of the pieces listed.
The full 'inventory' that is listed here under 'Inventory' follows the index and the numbers given therein (Roman numerals, corresponding to the openings). However, the only pieces actually contained in this source are the following (with the numbering following the modern pencil pagination, which is in square brackets):
- [I], i.e. the verso of the index: Colla iugo / Bona condit / Libera me
- [VIII]: Fauls semblant / Vidi Dominum
- [VIII]: Qui es promesses / Et non est
- unpaginated verso of [VIII]: O dira natio / Mens in nequitia
Notation
Ars Nova
Ruling
each page ruled with fifteen 5-line staves
Foliation
The two surviving folios have the following pencil foliation: - '2' (with [I] on the verso) - '3' and '[VIII]' (both on recto - nothing on verso) The 'foliation' in the full inventory follows the original index, which uses Roman numerals for the openings (i.e. not for folios)
Decoration
Red and blue round initials with flourishes typical of northern-western Europe (France) during second half of 14th century
Index
Index on f.1r provides incipits for 114 works (38 unica) including French and Latin motets, a troped Kyrie, Credos, chaces, chansons and a hymn. Despite apparent inconsistency in the first gathering, the items are indexed not by folio but by opening, using Roman numerals; the DIAMM inventory follows this convention. The index's first column on left is headed 'Motez ordonez et escriz ci apres', with continuation 'selon le nombre […]' erased, and it lists motets for the first 33 openings (1st four gatherings); second column motets for openings 34 to 45 (last two gatherings). A third column is headed 'Balades et rondeaus ci apres escriz par le nombre' and lists 35 chansons (ballades, rondeaux, a virelai and a hymn) out of sequence. The first song appears in the 10th opening. Differences in index hand and similarities with newer portions of note of ownership suggest that only the motets and some songs in the first four gatherings were copied by 1376 (BentTR). The motets and songs in 5th and 6th gatherings, and up to 12 songs in 3rd and 4th gatherings (from Dame de qui), were added after this date. Machaut's ballade Phiton le merveilleux serpent is listed twice, once in original index layer and again in newer layer, for successive openings.

RISM Description
RISM B/IV 2: A parchment bifolio meas. 452x325 mm. and dated 1376 is all that now remains of a once central French 14th century source of motets and secular music. Fortunately, the recto of the first folio is an index to the complete manuscript, so that its original contents can be largely reconstructed (complete with concordances in BesselerS II, 236fF). Moreover, at the head of the same page are the words Iste liber motetorum pertinet capelle illustrissimi principis Philippi ducis Burgundie et comitis Flandrie. The duke of Burgundy was not the original owner, however, since his name replaces an earlier one that has been erased. Also erased is the reference to the scribe who wrote the ms in 1376. The name Michael de . . . ia could be read with the aid of ultra-violet light; it appears that he was chaplain to the prince whose name was erased. This Michael has been tentatively identified with a chaplain of king Charles V of France who was mentioned in some accounts concerned with the royal library in May, 1371. In 1420 SERRANT was no. 64 in the library of the duke of Burgundy at Dijon. Probably it was one of the many valuables which Louis XI gave to Georges de la Tremoîlle when he was made governor of Burgundy in 1477. Like many another musical codex of the late Middle Ages, however, even the few pages we have of SERRANT were only preserved because they were used as a cover for accounts. In the index, motets still take pride of place, and in fact, out of 114 pieces on SERRANT's 48 folios, 71 are motets. Many pieces occur in I-IV. 5 are by Philippe de Vitry and no less than 17 by Guillaume de Machaut. There are only 5 mass movements and 1 hymn. The typical Ars Nova notation employs up to 15 red five-line staves per page. Initials of the rather Gothic-looking but typically French 14th century script are blue or red with contrasting filigree.
