General Description

One of the complete Machaut manuscripts, and perhaps the earliest in the Bibliothèque Nationale. The polyphonic compositions are 2 lays, 23 motets, 39 Ballades, 21 Rondeaux, 8 Virelais, the mass and the hocket.

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 306 x 220 mm. and containing 494 folios with an original foliation in red ink at t.m.r. + f. A-G at the beginning + 1 unnumbered paper and 2 unnumbered parchment leaves at the front, and 4 unnumbered parchment and 1 unnumbered paper leaves at the back. Folios A-G are original pages comprising the old index and the Prologue to Machaut's works, but they have no old foliation, only a modern one in ink at t.r.r. The paper leaves belong to the 18th century binding, as does the paper index of 8 pages inserted between f. 493 and 494. The binding is the typical red morocco of the Bibliothèque du Roi with wooden boards beneath and gilt tooling on the covers and spine. As the siglum indicates, this is one of the complete Machaut manuscripts, and perhaps the earliest in the Bibliothèque Nationale. The script is a typical French minuscule of the period and there are many miniatures. Only three of them employ colours other than a spot of red (here there are also blue and gold). Initials, miniatures and filigree are mainly written with pen and ink. The notation is of typical Ars Nova type with 10 red five-line staves per page. There are occasional red notes and frequent dots and accidentals. In the lays there are 8 staves per page, due to the double text underlay. The polyphonic compositions in Pn 1584 amount to 2 lays, 23 motets, 39 Ballades, 21 Rondeaux, 8 Virelais, the mass and the hocket.
