General Description

This important Machaut MS was written by Guiot de Sens, who worked continuously till it was finished, according to the explicit. It contains the Dit du Vergier, the Jugement du Roy de Behaigne, the Remède de Fortune, the Dit du Lion, the Confort d'Ami, the Dit de la Harpe, etc. Music is provided for only two pieces, the two ballades from the Remede. The initials are omitted in both cases, and in the second piece the third strophe of text is missing. The writing is in two columns.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2 : A parchment ms finished on the Friday of the second week in April, 1371. It consists of 103 folios meas. 297 x 207 mm. and numbered in modern pencil at t.r.r. A medieval foliation at t.m.r. is in red ink, using Roman numerals and running from I-CXXXVIII. Folios 4, 5, 9-20, 29, 41, 48, 49, 61-68, 71, 83, 86, 92-94, 107, 115, 124, 126, 129 of this old foliation are now missing, and moreover after f. 80 and 91 new folios without a number have been added. In addition to the 103 numbered folios there are two unnumbered paper flyleaves at each end which belong to the binding of white vellum over cardboard dating from c. 1700. The watermark of these flyleaves is Bernese. This important Machaut ms was written by Guiot de Sens, who worked continuously till it was finished, according to the explicit. It contains the Dit du Vergier, the Jugement du Roy de Behaigne, the Remède de Fortune, the Dit du Lion, the Confort d'Ami, the Dit de la Harpe, etc. The provenance is unknown, but perhaps the 16th or 17th century shelfmark, m 28, may help to shed light on its origins. Music is provided for only two pieces, the two ballades from the Remede, in the usual Ars Nova notation on red five-line staves. The initials are omitted in both cases, and in the second piece the third strophe of text is missing. The writing is in two columns.
