General Description

Ff. 1-40 copied in the vicinity of Venice; remaining folios copied in Brescia (see Watermarks). The manuscript remained in Brescia until the mid-18th century, when it was taken to the Biblioteca dei Canonici Regolari di San Salvatore, in Bologna. It was transferred to the Biblioteca Universitaria after 1798.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 5: XVe s. 57ff. (+ 2ff. ajoutés au XVIIIe s. chiffrés a-c et portant la table du ms.) papier, 400 x 290 mm. Pagination ancienne (XVIIIe s.) en ch. arabes en haut des p. et foliotation récente ajoutée en 1969 lors de la dernière restauration du ms. Le fo 96 est blanc, le fo 41 coupé à mi-hauteur. Notation mesurée noire (sauf les nos 23 et 68 en notation mesurée blanche, les nos 1, 79, 80, 81, 83 en notation grégorienne). 10 portées par p. Aux p. 1. 32, 64, 97, initiales rubriquées. Reliure moderne en parchemin blanc.

A la suite de la suppression des congrégations religieuses, ce ms. entra en 1816 à la Biblioteca Universitaria de Bologna, et le P[adre] Martini fit précéder la Table qu'il en dressa au XVIII s. de l'indication suivante que l'on trouve à la p. a du ms. (et aussi aux ff. 59-61 du ms. Mise. H. 83 du Civico Museo Bibliografico musicale de Bologna): «In un Ms. cartaceo Bressiano appresso il P[adre] Rev[erendissi]mo Trombelli Gen[erale] de[i] Canon[ici] Regolari di S. Salvatore si contengono le seguenti compos[izioni] ...» Le ms. proviendrait donc de Brescia où il fut très probablement copié, en partie tout au moins, et où il fut acquis au milieu du XVIIIe s. par le P. Giovanni Crisostomo Trombelli. Le filigrane le plus fréquent indique d'ailleurs un papier de Brescia où la compilation du ms. n'aurait pu avoir lieu, en tout cas, avant l'annexion de cette ville par la République vénitienne en 1426-28 puisque les motets nos 42 et 56 célèbrent le doge de Venise. D'autre part, le motet de Dufay no 40 qui célèbre la paix de Viterbe signée en 1433, et le motet no 60 où l'on peut voir une allusion au siège que Brescia, fidèle à Venise, soutint victorieusement en 1438-40, fournissent aussi des critères de datation. Le répertoire qu'on peut donc dater de 1420 à 1440 environ, a été ordonné par genres en 4 parties par le copiste qui en a marqué les limites avec 4 capitales rubriquées (I-II: parties de messes; III: motets; IV: pièces profanes); mais les adjonctions postérieures ont bouleversé le plan initial, maintenant difficilement reconnaissable. Black mensural notation with white coloration; several pieces were added in white mensural notation. Simple black inked initials, with larger red calligraphic initials marking the beginnings of the four sections of the compositions.

Before 1440 (first 40 folios); after 1440 (ff. 41-57); after 1450 (pieces added in white notation). Ff. 1-40 copied in the vicinity of Venice (watermark similar to Briquet #3959-83); remaining folios copied in Brescia (watermark similar to Briquet #14871-5, found exclusively in Brescia, 1434-45). The manuscript remained in Brescia until the mid-18th century, when it was taken to the Biblioteca dei Canonici Regolari di San Salvatore, in Bologna. It was transferred to the Biblioteca Universitaria after 1798.
