General Description

Main corpus – theoretical treatises by Philippe de Vitri and others (ff. 3-10 of first section; ff. 120-142 of second section), and 14 apparently monophonic pieces – copied by a single scribe. Second scribe made later additions on openings left blank by first scribe. Early studies tentatively identified main scribe as the poet and theologian Heinrich Louffenberg (ca. 1390-1460); see Bor S and TimmU for discussion. Some of the secular pieces also have Latin motet texts appended. Of southwest German monastic origin (TimmU); perhaps copied in Strasbourg, Freiburg im Breisgau, or vicinity (RISM). Entered Bibliothèque Municipale in Strasbourg at unknown date; destroyed by fire during Franco-Prussian War in 1870. Contents reconstructed by Charles Van den Borren from descriptive notes, thematic incipit list, and partial transcription made c. 1866 by Edmond de Coussemaker (now preserved as Brussels, Bibliothèque du Conservatoire Royal de Musique, MS 56286; see CouM for modern facsimile edition of portions of latter manuscript).

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 3: 15. Jh.; 155 Blätter Papier 290 (260?) x 210 mm. Zwei aufeinanderfolgende Foliierung: 1. f. 1-11 + 1 Blatt ohne Foliierung ; 2. f. 1-143. Je Seite wohl meist 8 Fünf- oder Sechsliniensysteme Schwarz-rote, in den Nachträgen auch weiße Mensuralnotation; vereinzelt auch gotische Choralnotation - Einband: teilweise mit rotem Leder überzogene Holzdeckel; auf dem hinteren Deckel stand: Liber musicalis.

Die im Jahre 1870 in Straßburg verbrannte Handschrift ist heute in einer in Brüssel liegenden Teilkopie Coussemakers erhalten, welche sämtliche Incipits sowie einzelne Stücke in extenso enthält. Von f. 78v ist zudem ein Faksimile bekannt (siehe unter Ausgaben). Die Handschrift stammt aus elsässisch-südwestdeutschem Raum (Straßburg, Freiburg i. Br., Zofingen (?)) und wurde in ihrem ältesten Teil im frühen 15. Jh. geschrieben (vergleiche Jahrzahl 1411 auf f. 142). Die Nachträge reichen bis in die Jahrhundertmitte herauf. Als Schreiber kommt nach Jung und Coussemaker vielleicht Heinrich von Laufenburg in Frage.

INCIPITVERZEICHNIS

Das Incipitverzeichnis folgt in der Numerierung der grundlegenden Publikation van den Borrens. Wo sich zwei Nummern als zu einem Stück gehörig herausgestellt haben, ist eine Doppelnummer gesetzt. Die Foliozahlen folgen Coussemakers Catalogue thématique (nach Borren), der nur das Incipit, meist des Superius, enthält. Die mit diesem in Coussemakers Abschrift vollständiger Stücke nicht übereinstimmenden Foliozahlen sind in Klammern gesetzt. Die von Coussemaker in extenso überlieferten Stücke sind mit der entsprechenden Nummer in eckige Klammern gesetzt und mit einem * versehen. Die vom gleichen Forscher angegebene Stimmenzahl nicht vollständig kopierter Stücke ist hinter das Incipit in Klammern gesetzt. Textergänzungen nach WolfGdM unter anderem sind in eckigen Klammern vermerkt. Punkt(e) nach dem Textincipit sind nur dort gesetzt, wo Coussemaker eine vollständige Kopie eines Werkes gegeben hat. Von Coussemaker nach der Handschrift hinzugefügte Kontrafakturtexte sind mitberücksichtigt. Wo die Art der Notation nicht aus dem Incipit ersichtlich ist, wird diese nur dort näher bezeichnet, wo es sich (nach van den Borren) um gemischtfarbige oder um nicht-schwarze Notation handelt.
