General Description

Eight strips and six folios, recovered from binding of an account and memorandum book kept by Thomas Swynton at Fountains Abbey (Yorkshire) from 1446 to 1460. Music on ff. 10'-12' in score format; other pieces in choirbook format. Copied by one main scribe and two additional scribes (BentFF). Seven concordances with LonBL 57950, but apparently no direct relationship between the two manuscripts. Of English origin; probably copied at Fountains Cistercian Abbey in Yorkshire (BukMR, but see BentFF for reservations). Originally part of a larger music manuscript disassembled and used as binding material during 15th century. Fountains account book owned in 20th century by Lt. Col. Sir W. H. Ingilby; purchased by British Museum at a Sotheby's sale in 1920. Bertram Schofield of Museum staff later discovered music fragments in binding; they were subsequently removed and catalogued separately as Additional MS 40011 B (account book now MS 40011 A)

RISM Description

"Fountains fragments": strips and pages.

RISM B/IV 4: 14./15.

[Translation] 14th/15th century; 8 thin parchment strips and 5 sheets of paper, 295 x 220 mm. Modern foliation of f. 1-8 (strips) and f. 9-14 (paper sheets). Strips, each with 1 five-line system (some trimmed) with black mensural notation of the early 14th century; paper pages each have 10-12 five-line systems with white mensural notation (with black coloration) of the late 14th or early 15th century - Binding: 1926; strap with leather backing.

These fragments, known as the Fountains fragments, contain the second Incipit index, which dates from the early 14th century and the 5 leaves from the late 14th or early 15th century. Both are from the cover of a Memorial Book written in 1446-1460 by Thomas Swynton from Fountains Abbey (catalogued separately in London today as Add. 40011A). While the parchment strips contain just one line with text above the notes or only one system or a staff on top with text beneath, the paper sheets contain either the whole work, or a good part of them. After Andrew Hughes transcribed them, these fragments have been copied in a larger manuscript.

INCIPIT INDEX: First is the Incipit list for the 5 paper pages, followed by the (a-p) Incipit index of the fragments, which are not in their correct order.

5 Glorias, 1 Credo, 4 Sanctus, 5 Agnus, 2 motets =17+1 duplicate = 18 (several incomplete)

(Pennard?)-1, (Pycard?)-1, (Rowlard)-1, anon-14

8 small parchment strips (newly numbered 1-8), and 6 paper folios, 293 x 215 (newly foliated 9-14), recovered from binding of an account and memorandum book kept by Thomas Swynton at Fountains Abbey (Yorkshire) from 1446 to 1460. Repertory listed above is on paper folios only; parchment strips (not from same original manuscript as paper folios) contain fragments of 14th-century motets not within scope of this catalogue. Original parchment covers of the account book now included with MS 40011 B.

White mensural notation with black coloration (one of earliest known manuscripts in white notation). Music on ff. 10'-12' in score format; other pieces in choirbook format. Copied by one main scribe and two additional scribes (BentFF). Several decorated initials. Watermark apparently belongs to group Briquet #8462-84. Seven concordances with LonBL 57950, but apparently no direct relationship between the two manuscripts.

Ca. 1400 (HarrnMMB); ca. 1420-30 (BukMR); repertory dates from ca. 1380-1400 (BentT). Of English origin; probably copied at Fountains Cistercian Abbey in Yorkshire (BukMR, but see BentFF for reservations). Originally part of a larger music manuscript disassembled and used as binding material during 15th century. Fountains account book owned in 20th century by Lt. Col. Sir W. H. Bertram Schofield of Museum staff later discovered music fragments in binding; they were subsequently removed and catalogued separately as Additional MS 40011 B (account book now MS 40011 A)
