RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: An early 15th century vellum manuscript meas. 206 x 149 mm. and containing 44 folios + 3 unnumbered paper flyleaves at the front (with a portrait of Pepys on the verso of the third one) and 4 similar leaves at the end, all 7 belonging to the 17th century Pepys binding of black-brown mottled leather over pulp boards. The gilt tooling on the spine includes the title "VIEUX || CHANS || MSS", while the Pepys arms in gilt appear on the back cover. The codex, which is foliated in modern pencil at t.r.r., is written in a current early 15th century script in 2 cols, with red-blue initials. On f. 44v a pencil-sketch of a lady dates from c. 1500 and betrays some skill, while on f. 12v may be found an attractively illuminated miniature in gold, blue, red, green, etc. The contents of the ms are Machaut's Remède de Fortune (f. l-36v) and a treatise on love (f. 38-43). The music to the interpolations in the Remède is in typical Ars Nova notation on 8 red five-line staves per page, and is liberally sprinkled with accidentals.
