General Description

Polyphony on ff. 29-158'. Main corpus of polyphonic section copied by two music and five text scribes (HoppT); Mass on ff. 139'-141' is later addition by a different hand. All repertory unique to this manuscript. Probably copied at Cyprus, for court of King Janus (r. 1398-1432); though KügleGS has more recently argued that it was copied at Brescia c. 1434-5.

Possibly commissioned for Janus' second wife, Charlotte of Bourbon; music probably composed by French musicians who came to Cyprus in 1411 as part of Charlotte's retinue (HoppCF). Perhaps brought to Italy in 1434 by Anne de Lusignan, daughter of Janus and Charlotte, at time of Anne's marriage to Louis, Count of Geneva (son of Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy). Manuscript included in 1749 catalogue of Turin library.

RISM Description

Copied by several hands to a single plan. 159 folios in total. Original foliation from 29-158. Folios 1-28 have 8 5-line staves per page. Binding missing, stored in box.

RISM B/IV 4: 15. Jh.; 159 Blätter Pergament, 380 x 300 mm (Pergament 380 x 260 mm, Rest durch Papier ergänzt); Originale Foliierung von f. 29-158 (f. 1-28 unleserlich). Je Seite f. 1-28 8, ab f. 29 12 rote Fünfliniensysteme mit schwarzer und schwarz-roter Mensuralnotation (f. 1-28 Quadratnotation). - Einband: fehlt; die Handschrift wird heute in einer Kartonschachtel aufbewahrt.

Diese, beim Brand der Turiner Bibliothek von 1904 rundherum angebrannte Handschrift wurde 1902 von W. Meyer entdeckt. Sie stammt vom Hofe der Lusignans auf Cypern und wurde zwischen 1413 und 1420 von mehreren Händen, aber nach einheitlichem Plan geschrieben (siehe Inhalt). 1434 gelangte sie mit Anna von Lusignan, die Ludwig, Grafen von Genf, heiratete, nach Savoyen. Die Handschrift stellt ein durchwegs singuläres, in sich geschlossenes Repertoire dar. Der Ordinariumszyklus f. 139v/141v wurde vermutlich etwas nach 1420 nachgetragen.

Inhalt: f. l-28r einstimmige, liturgische Gesänge, unter anderem 6 Ordinariumszyklen; f. 29r-57r Ordinariumssätze; f. 59r-97r Motetten; f. 98r-139v französischen Balladen; f. 139v-141v Ordinariumszyklus; f. 143r-158v Virelais und Rondeaux. - Leer sind: f. 28v, 57v-58v, 97v, 142r/v, 159r/v.
