General Description

A bifolio, and a small fragment of another bifolio, remnants of a choirbook containing Masses, motets, and secular pieces (original folio size probably c. 355 x 275); other fragments from same manuscript now NurS 9, although the repertory of this fragment is slightly later (CuthbertNMfrags) and Melk MS 749. See also the reconstruction of the fragments.

Copied by a single scribe, who also wrote NurS 9 & Melk 749. Possibly of south German or Austrian origin. Folios used c. 1460 by bookbinder Mathias aus Wien as binding material for astronomy manuscript treatise (Ptolemy: 'Almagest') owned by the mathematician and astronomer Johannes Regiomontanus (= Johann Müller) of Vienna. Regiomontanus later moved to Nuremberg; after his death (1476), his manuscripts passed to Nuremberg Stadtbibliothek, where 'Almagest' was catalogued as MS Centurio III, 25. Fragments with music were later removed from binding and now form the collection Fragment 9a.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: Two parchment flyleaves of the second half of the 14th century from ms III, 25 meas. (a) 305 x 407 mm. and (b) 27 x 403 mm. Originally of large quarto size, c. 340 x 255 mm., (a) is the right two-thirds and all the other folio of a bifolio, and (b) a strip from an adjacent folio. The top of the complete folio is missing, but apparently only the very top of the top stave is lost. The notation of these pages is of Ars Nova type on 9 red five-line staves per page. Red ink is also used for the initial 'P' of the Patrem on (a) f. 1v and for the dots in the fermatas.
