RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A late 12th century vellum manuscript meas. 248 x 173 mm. and containing 134 folios. The music added at the beginning and end, however, must date from the 13th century. The codex is primarily a Martyrology for St. Chad's at Shrewsbury or at least from the Lichfield diocese. There is a calendar at the beginning and end of the ms. The music at the beginning precedes and follows the calendar, while at the end it merely follows the dates. The notation varies. It may be square or neumatic, on four- or five-line staves, in red or brown ink. The lone two-part piece is neatly written in a classic 13th century square notation on 2 red five-line staves. It is one of 3 Alleluias in the same hand. The manuscript is bound in white leather over wooden boards; a clasp is missing. This is another codex which entered the Bodleian by the Rawlinson bequest of 1756.
