RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 13th century parchment manuscript meas. 167 x 118 mm. and containing 189 folios + 2 blank unnumbered paper folios at the front and 3 at the back belonging to the typical Sloane binding of medium brown leather over pulp boards (the Sloane arms are in gilt on the front and back covers). This miscellany, mainly of sermons, employs red, blue or blue-red initials. Music in the form of sequences appears at several points in the manuscript in small square unmeasured notation to fill up blank spaces. These pieces, which are written by various hands, are mainly monodic, but a single polyphonic sequence is written on 6 accolades of 2 brown four-line staves per page. Red initials are used here, and the presence of a d clef in the lower part suggests English origin. A wavy line separates the two parts written in score, a feature typical of 12th century sources.
