RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A collection of miscellaneous items mainly written by Coussemaker, and put together within a 19th century binding. Item 10 however is a single parchment bifolio of English origin meas. 344 x 235 mm., and items 11 and 12 are respectively Coussemaker's facsimile of piece 2 and his transcription of the bifolio as a whole. The fragment is a 14th century ms in Ars Nova notation, written in score throughout. There are 12 red five-line staves per page, and red capitals begin each piece, with smaller red ones for individual sections. There is no foliation. Apart from the English habit of joining together two ligatures with opposite propriety, one may note the rare accidentals G# F# G # in the middle part, though accidentals as a whole are frequent, including b before F. Coussemaker undoubtedly bought this ms in England, since there is also a reference in pencil to the purchase of "Hieronymi Epistulae; Eiusdem Musica cum figuris. Saec. XII. £9. 9.0". Generally known as the Coussemaker fragment, the ms was lost from sight for many years after Coussemaker printed piece 2 from it in facsimile in CoussH, but Handschin made most of its contents known for the first time.
