General Description

A Tenor II (Septima vox) partbook from a set originally of eight volumes. Pieces arranged by number of voices: only the first 23 pieces (for 8 & 7 voices) are in both surviving books. Quinta partbook then continues with 6vv (48v-87) & 5vv (96v-136) pieces; Septima is completed with pieces for 3vv (48v-75) and 2vv (88v-100).

Copied by a single scribe. Copied in Low Countries, perhaps at Antwerp or Brussels (FenIR). Ham notes some relationship to readings in Bologna Q26 independent of printed sources. Acquired, probably between 1725 and 1794, by Jesuit college for English Catholics founded at St. Omer (Artois) in 1593. College moved to Bruges in 1762, to Liege in 1773, and to present location near Whalley (Lancashire) in 1794.

This 12vv version of the Josquin 'Benedicta' was long assumed to be a concordance of the Guyot setting in Munich 1536, but it is in fact a different setting by Joachimus de Monte (see HamSt). Note: only 4 of the 6 extra parts survive; in this book Bassus III & Tenor III, in Septima the Superius II & III.
