RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A set of three manuscripts meas. 195 x 133 mm. and bound as one. There are 254 folios altogether plus two unnumbered paper flyleaves at each end from the old binding. A new binding dates from 15.1.59 and bears the title "THEMATA DIETA SALUTIS, ETC" in gilt on the spine. The old calf (probably c. 1600) is incorporated in the new calf front and rear covers. The unnumbered f. Bv contains a brief list of contents, and there is no old foliation, only modern pencil at t.r.r. The 15th century part of the manuscript (f. 1-132) is of paper with odd parchment pages intermingled. The other two parts (f. 133-192 and 193-254) are of parchment and date from c. 1200. Part I contains "Themata dominicalia super epistolas" (f. l-13v), "Dieta salutis" (f. 14 to 121) and an exposition of the Pater noster and Credo (f. 122-132). Part II consists of sermons by Maurice of Paris in French and others in Latin, while part III has excerpts from Jerome and Seneca's epistles. On f. 254v is an addition "Ex dictis domni Gileberti abbatis", which James clarifies as referring to abbot Gilbert Crispin of Westminster. Initials are in red or green in parts II and III. The music was added on a blank page (f. 192) in a different hand to that of the corpus of part II, and consists of a sequence, a responsory trope and 2 Agnus tropes written in a neat, smallish 13th century notation which has much in common with that of W1. The single notes are mainly longs, but rhomboids are used for repeated notes, usually after an initial long (as in W1). The clefs are C and F, and the staves vary from 8-10 lines in the same brown ink as the notes and text. There are five of these staves per page. For some reason the second strophe of no. 4 has been erased.
