RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 12th-13th century parchment manuscript meas. 212 x 123 mm. and containing a collection of short theological works. It belonged to Thame Abbey and later to William Forrest. A modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. replaces an 18th century ink one, also at t.r.r. The binding of yellow-brown leather has some black on the spine and gilt ornament, and bears the words "Codex Burneianus" in the centre of the front cover. A British Museum title on the spine reads "Opuscula Varia. Mus. Brit. Bibl. Burn. 357. Plut. CLXII. B" in gilt letters. The contents include Mico Levita de producendis et breviandis dictionibus and Hugo de decent preceptis. There are 24 numbered folios plus 3 modern unnumbered blank paper flyleaves each end. Burney has also interspersed odd blank unnumbered paper pages at various places throughout the codex. Music appears only on f. 15v-16, entirely in brown ink. The notation is reminiscent of certain 12th century sources such as London, British Museum, Additional 36881 with its narrow oblong, not square, notes and the rudimentary bar-lines. Nevertheless, it doubtless already belongs in the 13th century. There are six pairs of four-line staves per page, each pair more or less forming one eight-line stave.
