General Description

A collection of short religious texts and extracts, some by Augustine, Bernard of Clairvaux and Richard of St Victor. A gathering of songs opens the MS, and other verse texts also appear later in the compilation. The items related to St Francis (songs 60a and 62 and several unnotated verses) suggest a possible Franciscan origin for the MS. a variety of hands and layouts, and a large number of short texts, some copied in separate gatherings, suggest that the MS was copied piecemeal; however, a contents list of late thirteenth or early fourteenth century (James) on p.2 indicates that the volume was complete by that point. The songs, all in the first gathering, are in late thirteenth-century hands.

punctum and unconventional neumes. Songs 60a-64 probably copied by one notator (or several closely contemporary); 65 is in a different text- and music-hand. The punctum occurs rarely in the hand of the first notator, but vertical alignment lines on the stave are used very frequently, especially in 60b and 62. The b versicles of 60b are squeezed into the margins with some difficulty: from 61 onwards, both versicles of text are underlaid to each stave of music. 65 makes greater use of punctum and includes some unconventional neume forms.
