General Description

A Tenor Decani partbook from a set originally of eight volumes. The main scribe has been assumed to be John Barnard, a minor canon at St. Paul's Cathedral and editor of the print RISM 1641/5, though MorehS argues that the main scribe was more likely John Ward. Three other scribal hands at work may be Adrian Batten (ClarkAB), John Tomkins or William Cranford (MorehS). Copied in London. Books apparently used as printer's copy for John Barnard's The First Book of Selected Church Musick ( = RISM 1641/5); they contain instructions to printer regarding typography and layout. Later owned by William Gostling (d. 1777), a canon at Canterbury Cathedral (bookplate), and by Sacred Harmonic Society of London (1832-82). Library of latter purchased for newly founded Royal College of Music in 1883.
