General Description

Copied by a single scribe. Copied in Ferrara, for use at the ducal court of Alfonso I d'Este (1476-1534). Linked with the death there of Obrecht as maestro di capella (& his being preceded by Josquin) (LockRF).

Binding

Covers of leather over boards, with inscription 'Liber Choralis' stamped in gold on spine, may date from 19th century, or may be 19th-century restorations of original covers. (Similar covers also found on ModE M.1.11-2, ModE M.1.13, and ModE X.1.11).

XVe/XVIe s. 173 ff. Parchemin, 545x384 mm. Foliotation ancienne en haut des ff.: 2-174 et foliotation moderne au bas des ff.: 1-173. Dans la foliotation ancienne, le f.l mq. Aux ff. 2 et 60, coin supérieur coupé. Notation mesurée blanche. 9 portées par p. Capitales ornées or et couleurs.

Grand ms. de choeur copié très probablement à Ferrare durant le règne d'Ercole I auprès duquel Obrecht jouissait dès 1484 d'une grande réputation et qui l'avait appelé à sa cour en 1487, puis comme maître de chapelle de 1504 à sa mort en 1505, ce qui justifierait la place prépondérante donnée dans le ms. à ce musicien avec 7 messes sur 10. D'autre part, c'est en 1503-1504 que Josquin, qui figure ici avec 2 messes, avait séjourné à Ferrare (où, il est vrai, sa réputation l'avait précédé), toutes choses qui inclinent à dater plutôt le ms. de la 1ère décennie du XVIe s.

i + 173 + i parchment folios, 550 x 390. Original ink foliation, 2-174, on upper right rectos (f. 1 now missing, making first Mass incomplete); new pencil foliation, 1-173, on lower left rectos. Upper corner of original f. 60 torn out, undoubtedly for illuminated initial at top of f. 60'. Covers of leather over boards, with inscription "Liber Choralis" stamped in gold on spine, may date from 19th century, or may be 19th-century restorations of original covers. (Similar covers also found on ModE M.1.11-2, ModE M.1.13, and ModE X.1.11). Modern index on separate sheet kept loose in manuscript. Copied by a single scribe. Staff height 28.
