RISM Description
RISM B/IV 1: Two 13th century parchment manuscripts meas. 282 x 197 mm. and containing 186 and 221 folios respectively. Codex 3517 contains 2 unnumbered old paper flyleaves at each end, while codex 3518 is a little more complicated. 3 modern paper flyleaves at each end of the ms are quite blank and date from 1949; then there is 1 old unnumbered paper flyleaf at the front, while at the end 1 old unnumbered parchment flyleaf precedes the new leaves. The binding is of mottled calf over pulp boards and dates from the 18th century at the latest; it bears the arms of the prince of Isenghien and some gilt tooling. The two mss were no. 2001 in the prince's library; previously they were in the libraries of M. de Paulmy ("Belles-Lettres 1721") and the duke of La Valliere. ArsB is one of the sources of Gautier de Coincy's "Miracles de Nostre Dame". The script is Eastern French, initials red-blue. In codex 3517 there is an occasional old foliation in red at t.m.r. or t.m.v.; in 3518 this is continuous from f. 119-202. The 18th or 19th century ink foliation at t.r.r. is continuous. The music consists of a mixture of songs and motets written in unmeasured ligatures and undifferentiated longs with scarcely any tails. The polyphony is notated on 11 red four- or five-line staves per page. It is scattered in 3 different parts of the codex; namely 3517, f. 2-3 and 14; 3518, f. 117-118.
