General Description

Composite of two separate manuscripts later bound together: Part I = ff. 1-85'; Part II = ff. 86-199'. Part I copied by a single scribe; part II copied by several scribes. Most pieces are in quasi-score format, with one voice copied in red to facilitate legibility. Copied in Venice or vicinity, presumably at Franciscan monastery (JepV). Once owned by Somaschi religious order (founded 1528), housed adjacent to Church of Santa Maria della Salute, Venice; passed to present library in 1810, in connection with Napoleonic suppression.

XVe s. 202ff. Parchemin, 100 x 66 mm. Foliotation ancienne: 1-199 encre rouge jusqu'au f. 36, continuée par une foliotation plus récente, encre noire avec 2 ch. sautés entre 75-76 et 110-111. Les ff. 41v, 42r et v, 85v, 170, 173v, 183v, 196 à 199 sont blancs. Aux ff. 43 à 85, 121 à 126v, 142v à 144, 145 à 160v, 164v à 169v, 174 à 179, 180 à 195v, laudi, hymnes et séquences sans musique. Aux ff. 128r-v règles pour les novices. Notation mesurée noire et rouge. Notation grégorienne aux ff. 86-90, 93v-102, 104-107v, 160v-163v, 179-180v. 4 et 5 portées par p. Initiales rouges et bleues, ornées dans la 1ère partie. Reliure ancienne de cuir estampé brun, traces de fermoirs.

Au r du f. limin., une collette porte Provenienza: Somaschi della Salute. 22, ce qui indique que le ms. appartenait à l'Ordre des Somaschi, fondé à Venise en 1528 et qui avait un siège dans cette ville en l'église S" Maria della Salute. C'est en 1810 que, suivant les décrets de Napoléon, il passa à la Marciana.

Ce ms. est en réalité constitué de 2 mss. différents, et par l'écriture et par le style musical: I.- jusqu'au f. 85 inclus (1 à 42 pour la musique), 5 portées rouges par p. La notation mesurée noire et rouge qu'on peut dater au plus tard de la moitié du XVe s., s'applique à des compositions polyphoniques très évoluées (Dufay, Binchois). II.- du f. 86 à la fin, 4 portées noires par p. La notation est en partition (ou tablature d'orgue, comme le suggère Jeppesen?), les 2 vx. des pièces polyphoniques étant notées sur une seule portée, le Sup. en rouge, le T en noir, afin de les différencier. La notation carrée, très fruste, rend l'interprétation rythmique exacte souvent impossible et peut-être s'agissait-il de laisser ainsi libre cours à l'improvisation des exécutants auxquels on fournissait simplement des formules de chant grégorien pour les fonctions liturgiques. On peut dater cette 2e partie de la 2e ou 3e décennie du XVe s. Ces 2 mss. différents ont été ensuite réunis pour former le recueil actuel, dont on compléta alors la foliotation et auquel on ajouta à la fin quelques pièces sans musique copiées de diverses mains, cette compilation définitive s'étant proba-blement opérée dès le XVe s. Les laudi qui constituent la partie la plus originale du ms. comportent beaucoup d'unica. Pour 5 d'entre elles (n° 19, 20, 22, 23, 24), on trouve les poèmes aux ff. 59 à 68. précédés au f. 58v de la mention: Has sequentes novas vulgaresque laudes ad honorem omnipotentis Dei patris etfilii et spiritus sancti nuperrime composuit quidam frater pauperculus ordinis minorum eisque suaves sotiavit cantus. ce qui, avec le frater minorum mentionné aussi au f. 72v, évoque le cadre d'une Communauté franciscaine où aurait été compilé le ms.
