General Description

The manuscript corpus consists of an Evangeliarium for the year. A parchment flyleaf of the 14th century contains 5 monodic Ites and 2 Benedicamus dominos, and polyphonic music occurs at the end of the codex on a parchment flyleaf, which, following the old foliation, is numbered f. 160 (there are also a few later scribbles). The page is what remains of a chansonnier, and contains a unique Rondeau, a textless modulus with accompanying T and ContraT, and the Cantus of a Ballade. It is not certain that the modulus belongs to the T and ContraT, but they are all in the same mode (perfect rhythmically and Lydian tonally). The T uses the same cantus firmus as Machaut's Deo gratias.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A parchment manuscript of the 12th-13th century meas. 279 x 199 mm. and consisting of 157 folios plus a number of flyleaves. There is an old foliation at t.r.r. and the remains of another which is mostly cut away at t.m.r. At the beginning are four parchment flyleaves and five paper ones all numbered from 1-9 in modern ink outside the main foliation. The four paper leaves contain a 15th century index. Folios 84-85 of the ms corpus have long been missing. A further parchment flyleaf of the 14th century contains 5 monodic Ites and 2 Benedicamus dominos. The manuscript corpus consists of an Evangeliarium for the year. The polyphonic music occurs at the end of the codex on a parchment flyleaf, which, following the old foliation, is numbered f. 160. The script of the Evangeliarium is mainly Gothic with red, green, blue and gold initials. These colours are not generally used simultaneously. There are elegant French staffless neumes for the Exultet on f. 71v-73, for which the script is smaller than in the rest of the ms. The monodies at the front of the codex are in square plainsong notes of typical 14th century type on 7 red four-line staves per page. The binding is of dark brown leather over wooden boards with blind tooling. The back and spine are damaged at the top and two clasps are missing. The polyphony is written in Ars Nova notation of the late 14th century employing the punctus syncopationis, and the script is typically French with initials in red and blue. Originally there were nine red five-line staves per page, but now there are only eight, since the top stave has been cut away. There is a hole in the middle of the page and other blemishes. There are also a few later scribbles in white notation.
