General Description

GB-Ob MS. Mus. c. 60 is a miscellaneous collection of musical fragments from various periods (111 folios). Only a few carry polyphony, and these fall into two groups: 14th-century English fragments (see entry for MS. Mus. c. 60 (I) - 14th cent. fragments), and 15th-century continental fragments described here.

Two half-folios and two smaller paper fragments, all from same original folio, bear polyphony. Removed in 1952 from binding of printed book Auct.4.Q.5.46 in this library (Speculum peregrinarum questionum Bartholomei Sybille Monopolitani - Strasbourg, 1499). Two smaller fragments recovered from binding of same book in 1979. All four fragments subsequently fastened together to form a single reconstructed folio. Possibly of north Italian origin (physical similarities to parts of TrentC 87 and TrentC 92). Printed book from which fragments were recovered formerly owned by Buxheim, a Carthusian monastery in southern Bavaria. Acquired by Bodleian Library at a sale of books from Buxheim in 1884.
