RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2 Additional ms 41667 is a recent compilation, consisting mainly of 17th to 19th century letters and papers, but on f. 26-27 (letter I according to the present subdivisions of the ms) are to be found two folios of a mid-14th century musical manuscript originating in France and meas. 276 x 205 mm. The notation is Ars Nova, and the text reveals a Picard scribe. There are 9 red five-line staves per page, and initials are in red. Unfortunately, except for De ce que folz pensé, which is a slightly later addition to the corpus, all the other pieces are incomplete. Motets usually take up a double side, so that here either Tr or Mot is missing. At the bottom right-hand corner of f. 26 is a note, which reads : "found in between cover of Old Book at Ampleforth College dated 1481 on August 18th". The present binding is of modern dark red morocco with the following title in gilt on the spine: "Miscellaneous letters and papers". The musical fragment was formerly known as the McVeagh fragment after the name of its previous owner. It bears no original foliation.
