General Description

A Sextus partbook from a set of six volumes. Each book is organised systematically in two main sections (psalms and responsories), each in turn grouped into pieces in 4vv, 5vv, and 6vv. These six series are each numbered - see below. Sections of blank folios separate each series of pieces.

Copied mostly by Jodocus Schalreuter, who is named in dedicatory inscriptions at beginning of all but the Quintus and Sextus books. Slightly later additions by two other scribes; first wrote Series I, #40-43, Series III, #9-11, and Series V, #28; second, probably Georg Neumeyster, wrote Series I, #44, Series II, #20, and Series IV, #36. Probably copied in Magdeburg or Wittenberg (SteudeU).

Original owner and main scribe was Jodocus Schalreuter (ca. 1486-1550), active at Church of St. Mary or Church of St. Catherine in Zwickau until his banishment in 1547, resulting from his continued allegiance to the deposed Elector of Saxony, Johann Friedrich I; ZwiR 73 probably copied during period of Schalreuter's exile (SteudeU). Manuscript inherited by Schalreuter's sons, Paul and Nicolaus, in 1550. Later in same year, Schalreuter sons gave manuscript to Georg Neumeyster, former pupil of Jodocus Schalreuter, in Wittenberg; presented by Neumeyster to Zwickau Ratsschulbibliothek in 1553.

Problem: the six partbooks have been incorrectly inventoried as if each contains one section of the six sections into which the repertory is divided (i.e. the inventory of series 1 is in the [S] part book, series 2 in the [A] part book etc.). Resolved: I've transferred the inventories of each series from the various partbooks onto the Discantus, where the complete inventory is now consolidated, and DELETED the items attached to each of the other books (but left the 'inventory provided' tick-box ticked). The set therefore has a complete inventory, but users will have to refer to the Discantus to find it. [Other books don't have inventories or the inventory tab, but also don't display the text 'DIAMM does not have inventory...'.] I've added the 'series numbering' for each piece so that it shows on the inventory, in lieu of foliation. (I also noticed we had two composers Virgilius Haugk & Haugk Virgilius! So I have combined them.)
