RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: 4 paper flyleaves dating from c. 1400 and meas. approximately 140 x 210 mm. Cec 300 was removed from printed book no. 331.4.9, which in fact consists of two prints, namely Leonis Baptistae Alberti Florentini viri clarissimi Libri De re aedificatoria decent (Paris, 1512) and Vegetius' De re militari, Frontinus' De re militari, Aelianus' De instruendis aciebus and Modestus' De vocabulis rei militaris (Paris, 1515). Other fragments from the binding of 331.4.9 are from early incunabula, including Caxton (c. 1490). The binding is of pulp boards covered in brown leather ornamented with blind tooling at front and back. It came from the Cambridge binder Garett Godfrey (fl. 1503-39). The musical flyleaves together form 2 quarto folios which were cut in half horizontally to fit the printed book. They are written in Ars Nova notation with white or red coloration and employ mensuration signs. In spite of their fragmentary condition, the 3 three-part Kyrie Tro represent a useful addition to the repertory of late medieval English mass music, for they have only been known since about 1954 and are not to be found in other sources.
