General Description

Vol. Ill of a 3-volume Gradual containing mostly monophonic music, with polyphonic pieces on ff. 3'-4, 5', 192', and 194'. Probably copied and used at Guardiagrele, in central Italy. This manuscript and GuardSM 2 are the earliest known sources of polyphonic music from this region.

194 parchment folios, 550 x 420. Two sets of old foliation, one in red Roman numerals, I-CLXXXVII, the other in inked Arabic numbers; also a new pencil foliation. The manuscript is Vol. Ill of a 3-volume Gradual containing mostly monophonic music. The polyphonic pieces (ff. 3'-4, 5', 192', and 194') are in black mensural notation.

Copying of the liturgical books in this library took place between 1333 and the first decade of the 15th century; the polyphony dates from the early 15th century. Probably copied and used at Guardiagrele, in central Italy. This manuscript and GuardSM 2 are the earliest known sources of polyphonic music from this region.
