General Description

One of six partbooks, each containing various voice-parts. Probably copied by Dericke Gerarde, composer and music director for Henry Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel. Probably copied at Nonesuch Palace (Cheam, Surrey), for use in household of Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel (d. 1580). Later passed to Arundel's son-in-law, John, 6th Baron Lumley (d. 1609). Arundel-Lumley collection became part of Old Royal Library, which passed to newly founded British Museum in 1757.

6 paper partbooks (various voice parts in each book; all have ii paper + ii parchment [= original covers] + 24 paper + ii paper folios, except MS 52, with 23 original folios), 152 x 257. New ink foliation in each book. Modern covers of tan cloth on boards; original parchment covers (with inscription "Lumley") now bound in at beginning of each book. No index. Probably copied by Dericke Gerarde, composer and music director for Henry Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel; Gerarde also copied LonBLR A57 and several other manuscripts not within scope of this catalogue (see EppsDG, BernsCE for list and discussion). No initials or decoration. Only portions of one watermark (Briquet #5304?) visible on some folios.
