General Description

The main scribe was Hartmann Schedel, but there is evidence of eight additional music hands and 12 additional text hands. French texts generally corrupt; some pieces have text incipits or titles only. Manuscript also contains 23 German secular texts without music; several of these can be fitted to musical settings which appear elsewhere in manuscript with text incipits only. Copied in Leipzig, Augsburg, and Nuremberg. The compiler and original owner was Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514), a physician and humanist. Acquired in 1552 by Johann Jakob Fugger (1516-75); sold in 1571 to Albrecht V, Duke of Bavaria. Placed in Bavarian ducal court library at Munich, whose holdings formed foundation of present Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
