General Description

An Altus partbook from a set originally of five volumes (much of repertory concordant with LonBLE 2009, 2011, and 2012, but this volume does not belong to that set although it provides the missing Altus for many pieces). Music copied by a single scribe, employed by Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music.

Subsequent history parallels that of MSS Egerton 2009, 2011, and 2012. These three books bear inscriptions indicating ownership in 1669 by Stephen Aldhouse, of Matlask, Norfolk, a witness to Paston's will; LonBLE 2010 is not similarly inscribed, but Aldhouse's ownership is virtually certain. Purchased by British Museum at a Puttick's sale in 1866.

No initials or decoration. Most of repertory concordant with MSS Egerton 2009, 2011, and 2012 in this library, but latter three do not belong to same set as present book (see entry for LonBLE 2009).

Early 17th century. Of English provenance; originated in the household of Edward Paston (1550-1630) of Norfolk, a country gentleman and collector of music. Subsequent history parallels that of MSS Egerton 2009, 2011, and 2012.
