General Description

An incunabulum (Hain *9002) containing sermons by Hugo de Prato. A music-bearing folio has been cut across the middle into two pieces and was stuck inside the binding and over the flyleaves to strengthen the binding. Now the two pieces have been removed and rejoined: they reveal a motet MS similar to I-IV. The rubricator has added the name 'Guillermus de Mascandio' in red letters, following the very fine guide-script in the right-hand margin. The arrangement is in two columns for Tr and Mot and two continuous lines below for the end of the Tr and the complete T. The two bottom lines on the page are the conclusion of a Mot from the preceding (lost) verso. The rubricator proceeds in exactly the same manner on the verso with the name 'Philippus de Vitriaco' as he did with Machaut on the recto. In this work the Tr runs over into the continuous lines reserved for T and ContraT, while the T uses up the last two Mot columns.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: An incunabulum (Hain *9002) containing sermons by Hugo de Prato. The binding is of wooden boards covered in goffered calf. The music consists of a single parchment folio meas. 370 x 267 mm. which was cut across the middle into two pieces and then stuck inside the binding and over the flyleaves to strengthen the binding. The two pieces have been carefully removed and rejoined, revealing a typical 14th century motet manuscript similar to I-IV. This page bears the folio number 86 in Roman numerals at t.r.r., and is therefore part of a fairly large volume. The notation is of course of mid-century Ars Nova type. The rubricator has added the name "Guillermus de Mascandio" in red letters, following the very fine guide-script in the right-hand margin. The arrangement is in two columns for Tr and Mot and two continuous lines below for the end of the Tr and the complete T. The two bottom lines on the page are the conclusion of a Mot from the preceding (lost) verso. The rubricator proceeds in exactly the same manner on the verso with the name "Philippus de Vitriaco" as he did with Machaut on the recto. In this work the Tr runs over into the continuous lines reserved for T and ContraT, while the T uses up the last two Mot columns. Altogether there are 12 red five-line staves per page, and initials are in either red or blue.

'O speculum', incorrectly attributed here to Machaut, de-attributed and merged with the 'Vitry' motet in Durham which is another copy of the same piece.

Shelfmark for this ms fragment corrected: 'olim' shelfmark added to record (for cross-referencing purposes) the fact that Z260 is the classification number of the incunabulum in which the fragment was found, and not the shelfmark for the fragment itself.
