General Description

Copied by two or more scribes; first and fifth fascicles in same hand. First and last fascicles as presently constituted (containing mainly works by Matteo da Perugia) apparently adjacent to each other at earlier time. Copied in Bologna (fascicles 2-4) and Milan (fascicles 1 and 5) (GüntMM, who disputes other proposed provenances of Pavia, Pisa, or papal court at Avignon). Possibly owned by Este family of Ferrara since 15th century (PirrE). Este family library transferred to Modena in 1598; joined to Modena university library in 1892.

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

Eighteenth-century covers of brown blind-tooled leather replaced in 1966-7 by new covers of blue leather decorated in gold

DIAMM, 2017
Notation

Black full mensural with red full, red void, and black void coloration

DIAMM, 2017
Date

GüntMM rejects ApelFM's dating of 1425-50, PirrE's dating of 1420-30 for later fascicles, and ClercxJC's late 14th century dating for earlier fascicles

DIAMM, 2017
Ruling

9 or 10 five-line staves per page

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

a, 1-50, z; covers and boards (Stone 2005)

Jos Haring 2018
Foliation

Some original foliation remains; three other numbering systems: (1) older foliation, 1-51 (omits first folio); (2) newer foliation, 1-52; (3) modern pagination, 2-103, by A. G. Spinelli.

DIAMM, 2017
Decoration

Plain red inked initials in fascicles 1 and 5; red and blue inked initials with some filigree work in fascicle 4. Fascicles 2 and 3 more elaborately decorated, with five miniatures, painted initials (mostly pale rose on gold and blue grounds), and borders ornamented with gold dots and floral motifs; style of decoration resembles work of Niccolo di Giacomo of Bologna (1330-1402) and his school (GüntMM; FavaM I, 44-5).

DIAMM, 2017
Surface

i paper + 52 parchment + i paper

DIAMM, 2017
DIAMM Note

DIAMM foliation follows that of the modern facsimile edition by Ernesto Milano: the first folio is numbered a, beginning with 1 only after that. The pencil folio numbers in the manuscript (bottom, inner corner) begim at 1, hence are one higher than those on DIAMM.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 4: 15. Pag. (von A. G. Spinelli) von p. 2-103. Auf f. 2-11, 42-51 je 10 Fünfliniensysteme, von f. 12-41 je 9 Fünfliniensysteme mit schwarzer, schwarz-roter und schwarz-weißer Mensuralnotation um 1400. - Einband: 2.

Jh.; v. Fischer: Faszikel 2-4 zwischen 1400 und 1410, Faszikeln 1 und 5 zwischen 1410 und 1420.

Folio numbering is outdated. The commonly used folio numbering is based on that used by Anne Stone in her monograph on ModA from 2005, as well as in the facsimile edition by LIM. That foliation starts with fol. av., 1r, 1v .... and ends with 50v, zr, zv; it corresponds to your fol 1v, 2r, 2v .... to 51v, 52r, 52v

The inventory incorrectly states that Zacara's 'Gloria Laus et honor' is at f. 23v-25; it is instead the 'Credo Laus et honor' which is there.
