General Description

The main scribe (who also wrote portions of VatG XII.2 and VatS 46) remains unidentified, but see DeanS, who discusses probable influence of the calligraphier Ludovico degli Arrighi (d. 1527) on main scribe's work. Ff. 36'-77 and ff. 143'-146 copied mostly by Claudius Gellandi, who also wrote VatS 16, VatS 26, most of VatS 45, and portions of VatG XII.2, VatS 46, and VatS 55 (DeanS); some text added by Gellandi's assistant. Copied in Rome (PerkR, RifSC). Probably a wedding gift for Lorenzo de' Medici II (1492-1519) and Madeleine de la Tour d'Auvergne (1501-19).

XVIe s., 154 ff. Parchemin 420 x 275 mm. Foliotation ancienne en ch. arabes en haut des ff. Les ff. 2, 77v à 79, 88v, 89, 146v à 154v sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 10 portées par p. Initiales ornées en coul. et armes des Médicis au bas des ff. 2v et 3 par Attavante degli Attavanti. Reliure de velours rouge contemporaine du ms., tranche dorée. Au f. lr-v, Table du ms. avec acrostiche au f.lr: Vivat Semper Invictus Laurentius Medices Dux Urbini.

On distingue deux écritures dans ce ms., le 1er scribe en ayant rédigé la plus grande partie: f. 1 à 36 et 79v à 143, et le 2e les ff. 36v à 77 et 143v à 146. Bien que l'acrostiche de la Table indique clairement que le recueil a été rédigé à l'intention de Lorenzo de'Medici, petit fils du Magnifique, aucun ms. n'a donné lieu à autant de discussions concernant son origine. Pour Lowinsky (et aussi Sparks) il aurait été copié en France (bien que l'un des copistes soit italien) sur ordre de François 1er à l'occasion du mariage de Lorenzo avec Madeleine de La Tour d'Auvergne célébré à Amboise le 2 Mai 1518, alors que pour d'autres (Perkins, Rifkin), il aurait bien été destiné à Lorenzo mais par le pape Léon X qui l'aurait fait copier à Rome. Enfin, on peut penser aussi qu'il aurait été constitué tout simplement à Florence chez Lorenzo lui-même dont la mort inopinée aurait interrompu le travail, ce qui expliquerait que les derniers ff. soient restés blancs. Peut-être le ms. fut-il acquis ensuite par Carlo Strozzi au XVIIe s., un cachet portant les armes de la famille Strozzi figurant au bas du f. 1. En tout cas, il devient en 1913 la propriété de l'éditeur florentin Leo S. Olschki, puis de Mme Alida Varzi de Milan qui en a fait don à la Biblioteca Laurenziana.
